Supervisory Member


As a CCPOA member you receive legal representation covered on-the-job "course and scope" as well as family legal needs. This combination legal plan is provided by the CCPOA Legal Defense Fund. The Family Legal Plan portion is administered by Caldwell Legal, U.S.A.

Caldwell Legal, U.S.A., a national network of attorneys, has been contracted to help employees with these and other legal issues.

  • Prepare a Will.
  • Negotiate a divorce, child support or custody issue.
  • Deal with a DUI.
  • Handle legal issues arising from a home or car purchase.
  • Settle a bill you thought was unfair.

Your Professional Liability Coverage

It is our commitment that our membership deserves quality legal protection when the State "declines" to represent for on-the-job occurrences - incidents which are part of the course and scope of a normal job assignment, pursuant to the terms of the Plan documents.

As a Correctional Peace Officer, you know that the situations and stresses you face everyday are outside the comprehension of the average citizen. It's a fact that you are more likely to need someone to rely on for competent legal advice or even to defend you - especially if your case becomes controversial and the State politically "backs off" - leaving your professional career and personal finances hanging out to dry.

As a CCPOA member, you are eligible for legal representation in any civil or criminal action, investigation and certain court proceedings arising out of the course and scope of your employment (subject to the plan caps and the terms of the plan document).

Effective September 1, 2003, the Basic Legal Defense Fund Coverage has increased by $10,000 for both civil and criminal coverage. The aggregate civil coverage benefit has also been raised from $150,000-$200,000. For matters occurring as part of the course and scope of your employment, the Basic LDF Legal plan provides the following benefits for all active Bargaining Unit Six and CCPOA Supervisory Members:

LDF Criminal Coverage:
$60,000 individual
($200,000 aggregate) Additional BTF Piggyback Criminal Coverage:
$10,000 individual
($100,000 aggregate)

LDF Civil Coverage:
$60,000 individual
($200,000 aggregate) Additional BTF Piggyback Civil Coverage:
$10,000 individual
($100,000 aggregate)

This gives plan participants up to $70,000 each of Civil and Criminal liability (subject to the aggregate caps and to the charged offenses being considered within course and scope of employment). Unfortunately, many lawsuits will cost you more than this. Hence you need to consider enrolling in our voluntary, supplemental LDF plan, known as the CCPOA Premier Legal Plan.

Legal Protection for Yourself & Your Family

As a Correctional Peace Officer, your personal and professional future is at risk every day.  The CCPOA Basic LDF Legal Plan was developed by the CCPOA Benefit Trust Fund and the CCPOA Legal Fund Board to protect its membership, especially when the State refuses to represent you for "course-and-scope incidents" occurring while you are at work.

Unlike other prepaid legal plan offered to State employees, the CCPOA Basic Legal Program is provided premium-free to all CCPOA members. You do not have to do anything to sign up for this plan, other than to join CCPOA.

The CCPOA Basic Legal Program consists of two legal plans; the Basic LDF Legal Plan designed for on the job needs, and a Family Legal Plan administered through Caldwell Legal, U.S.A.

In addition to the legal liabilities you face on the job, you may need to talk to a lawyer about personal legal issues. Most of us don't hire a lawyer, however, simply because lawyers cost too much. This is no longer true for you. Effective September 1, 2002, every CCPOA member has premium-free group legal services
